Our verdict

For a Québec single-family home, the Generac Guardian remains the best overall value: automatic transfer switch included, the densest parts and technician network in the province, a 5-year warranty and Mobile Link monitoring.

Kohler offers a rugged engine and excellent build quality, but parts and service are harder to reach outside major centres, and the installed price is higher.

Champion makes sense on a tight budget or for a cottage, but the transfer panel is often sold separately and the warranty is shorter.
