Heat pump maintenance & troubleshooting guide

Well-maintained heat pumps last 15+ years and keep their manufacturer warranty. Follow the steps below — the ones our techs actually do in the field — then run the 8-step diagnostic before calling us.

Maintenance guide for Direct Air HX Pro

Every 2 weeks in heavy use · every 2 months in regular use

Cleaning the indoor filters

  1. Turn the unit off via the remote.
  2. Lift the filter from the top of the indoor unit.
  3. Vacuum lightly, then rinse with lukewarm water.
  4. Air-dry completely in shade before reinstalling.

Every winter + after every major snowfall

Clear snow and ice from the outdoor unit

  1. Keep 60 cm clear around and 1 m above the unit.
  2. Never use salt or chemicals near the coil.
  3. Use a soft broom — never a metal shovel.
  4. Never block louvers or cover the unit with a sealed tarp.
  5. Check that the condensate drain is not obstructed.

Once a year

Yearly maintenance visit by a VVS technician

  1. Refrigerant pressure check.
  2. Professional cleaning of indoor and outdoor coils.
  3. Test electronic boards, compressor and fan.
  4. Test temperature sensors and leak detector.
  5. Written report to the client + warranty preserved.

BEFORE CALLING

8-step diagnostic

  1. 1. Check the air filter

    Make sure it is clean and not clogged.

  2. 2. Check that the unit is clean

    • Indoor unit coil and fan.
    • Outdoor unit coil and fan.

  3. 3. Check there is no obstruction

    Make sure nothing blocks the air intakes or outlets of the indoor or outdoor unit (snow, ice, leaves, furniture, curtains, etc.).

  4. 4. Check the operating mode

    • Summer: Cooling (Cool / ❄).
    • Winter: Heating (Heat / ☀).
    • Do not use Auto, or modes.

  5. 5. Check the fan speed

    Set the fan speed to AUTO.

  6. 6. Check the setpoint temperature

    • In cooling, the setpoint must be lower than the room temperature.
    • In heating, the setpoint must be higher than the room temperature.

  7. 7. Let the system run

    Once set, let the unit run for 30 to 90 minutes without changing the settings.

  8. 8. If the issue persists, perform a reset

    • Turn off the heat pump breaker for 30 minutes.
    • Restore power.
    • Reconfigure the correct mode, setpoint and set fan to AUTO.
    • Let the unit run again for 90 minutes.

A service call is needed if…

After completing all the steps above, a technician is recommended if:

  • The heat pump still does not heat or cool properly.
  • The indoor or outdoor unit does not start.
  • The unit starts and stops repeatedly.
  • Performance remains insufficient despite proper setup.
  • The problem persists after a full reset.

  • A video showing the problem, if applicable.
